Microsoft Online Services SLA

One of our clients asked us about the Service Level Agreement Microsoft offers on its Microsoft Online BPOS environment. To be honest they were the first to ask. A common question is the uptime guaranteed by Microsoft but nobody asks for the actual SLA.

Because of their question I decided to look up the SLA's. They are available through the links below:

SharePoint Online 2010 Anonymous Access

SharePoint Online 2010 will have a lot of new features compared to the current version. For people wanting to host websites with SharePoint one of the most interesting new features is the possibility to enable anonymous access in SharePoint online. This feature combined with all the great WCM features of SharePoint 2010 will allow people to create websites in SharePoint which are hosted by Microsoft. The details of the SharePoint Online anonymous access offering are not available yet. However it is something to look forward to.

Migrating to SharePoint Online

Today Dalton Kroderer of Metalogix and Myself did a presentation on migrating to SharePoint 2010 from a MOSS 2007 or SPS 2003 environment. In the presentation we also discussed migrating to SharePoint Online with the Metalogix SharePoint Site Migration Manager.

Currently the SharePoint Site Migration Manager is fully supported by SharePoint Online Dedicated. It is also supported by SharePoint Online standard however doesn't cover all features.

Check out the presentation below:

If you want to play around with the products you can download them from the following site:

Wortell and Metalogix sign partnership

Wortell and Metalogix signed a partnership agreement. This partnership agreement allows Wortell to resell and implement the Metalogix products. The reason we signed the partner agreement is that we were impressed by the functionality the Metalogix software provides for migrating SharePoint 2007 environments to SharePoint 2010 environments.

Next to SharePoint 2010 migrations Metalogix can also be used for migrating content to SharePoint Online. The Metalogix SharePoint Site Migration Manager allows you to migrate content from an on premise environment to a cloud environment. Over the next few weeks I'll post something about the steps you can take for this migration.

SharePoint & Exchange Online to 25 GB

I just heard the great news that SharePoint Online and Exchange Online will be upgraded to 25 GB's starting the end of January. I was told by a helpdesk agent regarding a question why I couldn't buy any additional storage. The message said the following:

I have just gotten an update which explains why you are not able to buy additional storage.
From the end of January the default allocated space per user (of Share Point Online and Exchange Online ) will be 25 Gigabyte with no further charge and no further possibility for extra storage.
In the meantime, especially with regards to exchange, it is not possible to buy extra storage as it will come for free and automatically very soon.

A lot of people have been asking about this. So this is great news!!

Because the news came from a helpdesk agent and I did not have a change to verify the details please await the official announcement.

SharePoint Online will be part of Live @ EDU

From the blog of Kevin Dean on Technet:

Great news from Educause this week! Microsoft announced that new SharePoint Online-based collaboration and productivity services will be available for students as part of the Live@edu next year. These new SharePoint-based services will offer IT departments more flexibility and control to set up and manage their school's collaboration and productivity tools in a security-enhanced environment…as well as the ability to access and manage permissions to sites, documents and content (pictures, videos) with enterprise-class control.

Separately, Blackboard plans to announce an alliance with Microsoft that will offer students and learners a streamlined access to information from their courses while navigating the Web. Under the agreement, Blackboard and Microsoft will work together to enable notifications from students' online courses to appear in their Web browser using the Bing toolbar when new course information becomes available through the Blackboard Learn™ platform. Press release can be found here.

Finally, more universities are choosing Microsoft's cloud computing offerings, to save schools time and money.  In the past four months nearly 5,000 schools have enrolled with Live@edu joining the thousands of other institutions in more than 100 countries already providing Live@edu to tens of millions of students worldwide.

Custom Code in SharePoint Online

During the SharePoint Conference which is being held in Las Vegas this week, Tom Rizzo explained in his opening keynote, SharePoint Online will be able to host custom code created by developers. It will now be possible to create custom code in Sandbox Solutions from within Visual Studio 2010. This custom code can then be deployed to an On Premise SharePoint environment but can also be published to a SharePoint Online environment.

Because support for custom code in SharePoint online was one of the key points SharePoint Online was missing opposed to the On Premise version I personally believe this option will drive adoption of the SharePoint Online version even faster than is the case right now.

SharePoint Online for Internet Sites!

During the SharePoint Conference which is being held in Las Vegas this week Steve Ballmer announced during his opening keynote SharePoint Online will be available in both a standard version, comparable to the current SharePoint version and an all new SharePoint Online for Internet Sites version. With this new version Microsoft will host SharePoint sites which are published on the internet for companies. SharePoint Server 2010 for Internet Sites will be available On Premise in 2 different versions. Both a Standard and Enterprise version. Currently it is unclear which of both versions the SharePoint Online for Internet Sites will be.
